Mittens are warmer than gloves both on land and in water, by “grouping” 3 fingers into 1 “neoprene pouch” the fingers share warmth and also are less restricted encouraging more warm blood to flow from the core. The split allows the forefinger / index finger to be seperated which provides for a good grip with the thumb and thus can be used to grip to clear a mask for example or inflate a drysuit.
